THEIR CHALLENGE:

Newcastle University required a future-proof upgrade to its district heating network to support new high-efficiency boilers and a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, as part of its Net Zero strategy. The scheme needed to be delivered within a live, highly constrained campus environment, surrounded by operational buildings, public footpaths and key access routes, while maintaining uninterrupted university operations during term time and exam periods.

OUR SOLUTION

Applebridge Building Services delivered a technically complex and carefully managed installation, utilising Europe’s first 450mm pre-insulated PP-R/HDPE flow and return pipework of its kind. Our team applied specialist butt-fusion welding and electrofusion jointing techniques, while working collaboratively with the University’s Estates and Security teams to tightly coordinate logistics, access and programming. Early-morning deliveries, phased handovers and adaptive working hours ensured minimal disruption to students, staff and the public.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Applebridge Building Services was appointed to complete the following packages of works:

• Installation of 450mm diameter pre-insulated heating pipework
• Butt-fusion and electrofusion welded joints
• Excavation and reinstatement across mixed hard and soft landscaping
• Working around live LV/HV electric, data and drainage services
• Traffic, pedestrian and public safety management

THE RESULTS

The project successfully connected six key university buildings to a modern, low-carbon heating network, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Delivered safely, on programme and within a live environment, the scheme provides Newcastle University with a resilient, sustainable heating solution aligned with its long-term Net Zero ambitions.
