Their Challenge

Southmere Academy, part of Delta Academies Trust, required an upgrade to its existing outdoor areas to provide a safer, more inclusive and weather-resilient environment that could better support physical activity and curriculum-based learning. The existing surfacing and layout limited year-round use, presented ongoing maintenance issues and did not fully reflect the school’s ambition to create engaging outdoor spaces that contribute positively to pupil development.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver a coordinated programme of enabling works and construction to transform the academy’s external areas. Working closely with the school and specialist playground suppliers, we undertook full site preparation, installed robust foundations and drainage infrastructure, and delivered high-performance surfacing systems designed for intensive daily use. Our approach ensured the new environment was safe, durable and aligned with educational outcomes, while maintaining clear programme control and quality assurance throughout.

The Results

The project has delivered a modern, stimulating outdoor environment that supports physical development, collaborative play and curriculum-linked learning. The new surfaces and infrastructure provide improved durability and reduced maintenance requirements, while enhanced fencing and access controls strengthen safeguarding. Southmere Academy now benefits from outdoor spaces that can be used confidently throughout the year, maximising their value to pupils and staff.
