Their Challenge

Ryecroft Academy, part of Delta Academies Trust, sought to transform its outdoor environment to better support modern curriculum delivery, physical education and inclusive play. The existing playground and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) had reached the end of their service life, presenting limitations in safety, drainage performance and flexibility of use. The Trust required a Principal Contractor capable of delivering a coordinated redevelopment programme within a live school setting, ensuring safeguarding, programme certainty and minimal disruption to daily operations.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services was appointed as Principal Contractor to manage and deliver a comprehensive package of enabling, groundworks, surfacing and finishing works. Working closely with the school and Trust, ABS developed a phased construction approach aligned to the school timetable, enabling safe segregation of works while maintaining access and functionality.

Our team undertook full removal of redundant surfacing and play features, followed by re-profiling and formation of new sub-bases to provide robust foundations for long-term performance. Drainage improvements were incorporated to mitigate standing water and extend asset lifespan. New playground surfacing systems and an upgraded MUGA were installed to create versatile, durable and accessible outdoor spaces that support both structured sport and informal play.

The Results

The completed works have delivered a modern, high-quality outdoor environment that supports teaching, learning and physical activity across the school day. Pupils now benefit from safer, more resilient surfaces and clearly defined spaces for sport, play and outdoor learning. Improved drainage and robust construction provide long-term value, reducing future maintenance requirements.
