Their Challenge
Northern Education Trust required the safe removal of an ageing bungalow at Norton Primary Academy as part of a wider condition-led demolition programme. The structure had reached the end of its lifecycle and presented ongoing maintenance, compliance and safeguarding risks within a live school environment. The Trust needed a principal contractor capable of managing asbestos risks, ensuring full legislative compliance and delivering demolition works without disrupting day-to-day school operations.
Our Solution
Applebridge Building Services (ABS) acted as Principal Contractor, managing the works in strict accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and CDM Regulations 2015. We undertook intrusive asbestos surveys, appointed licensed removal specialists and implemented controlled removal procedures, including air monitoring and four-stage clearance certification.
Works were carefully phased and programmed around the academy’s operational requirements. Utilities were safely isolated, and demolition activities were segregated from pupil areas through secure hoarding, clear exclusion zones and controlled access. All waste streams were tracked and disposed of at licensed facilities, providing a complete audit trail for Trust assurance.

The Results
The redundant bungalow was removed safely and efficiently, eliminating a compliance and safeguarding liability from the school estate. All asbestos works were completed with full certification and statutory documentation, ensuring regulatory assurance for the Trust. The cleared and levelled area now provides a secure, flexible space for future development, while the academy remained fully operational throughout the programme.
