Their Challenge

Hazlehurst Academy required a comprehensive upgrade of its existing playground to create a safer, more inclusive and resilient outdoor environment that could better support physical activity, play and learning. The existing surfacing and layout had deteriorated over time, resulting in increased maintenance demands, reduced usability during poor weather and limited opportunities for structured and free play. The Academy sought a solution that would improve safeguarding, accessibility and long-term performance while minimising disruption to daily school operations.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services was appointed as Principal Contractor to manage and deliver a coordinated programme of improvement works. We developed a practical, buildable solution focused on creating robust external spaces capable of withstanding intensive daily use, while enhancing the quality and functionality of the playground. Works were carefully phased to maintain site safety and programme certainty, with close liaison between the project team and the Academy to ensure a smooth delivery.

The Results

The refurbished playground now provides a safer, more engaging and weather-resilient environment that supports both structured sport and everyday play. Accessibility and movement across the space have been improved, creating better flow and inclusivity for pupils. The new surfaces and construction standards have reduced ongoing maintenance requirements and extended asset life, delivering long-term value for the Academy. The project has enhanced the overall quality of the outdoor environment and strengthened the school’s ability to promote physical development and pupil wellbeing.
