Their Challenge

Abbey Park Primary Academy, part of the Northern Education Trust, required upgrades to its Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and main playground to improve surface performance, safety and suitability for modern PE delivery and play. Existing surfacing had deteriorated, limiting usability and increasing maintenance demands. The Academy needed a coordinated solution that could be delivered within a live school environment, with safeguarding, programme certainty and long-term durability as key priorities.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services was appointed as Principal Contractor to manage and deliver a planned programme of external works across the site. We developed a phased approach that addressed ground conditions, surface build-up and access arrangements while maintaining safe segregation from pupils and staff. Robust materials, proven installation methods and clear quality controls were implemented to ensure the finished areas would support year-round use and withstand intensive daily activity.

The Results

The Academy now benefits from a high-quality, resilient MUGA and improved playground surfaces that support PE, structured sport and everyday play. Safety has been significantly improved, usability extended across all seasons and maintenance requirements reduced. The upgraded environment provides pupils with better opportunities for physical activity while delivering a practical, long-term asset for the school.
