Their Challenge

Following severe storm and fire damage, Teesworks faced a significant safety risk at their Ore Handling Substation and Transformer T161. The existing 66kV transformer pen safety wall had been severely compromised, with cracked and unstable brickwork presenting a potential hazard to personnel, equipment and surrounding infrastructure.

The site itself introduced additional complexity. Historic transformer oil spills, airborne dust from nearby reclamation works, and the presence of live electrical cables and utilities required careful planning and strict safety controls. Teesworks needed a durable, long-term solution that would restore structural integrity while ensuring works could be delivered safely within a challenging operational environment.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services implemented a carefully planned programme to restore safety and strengthen the transformer enclosure. Damaged sections of the existing wall were safely demolished before two new brick safety walls were constructed on robust foundations to improve structural resilience.

Given the sensitive nature of the site, extensive safety measures were put in place. Protective systems were introduced to manage risks associated with live electrical infrastructure, airborne dust and heavy vehicle movements. Temporary scaffolding and shoring ensured stability throughout construction, while portable lighting provided safe working conditions in low-visibility areas.

Scope of Works

  • Demolition and removal of existing damaged brick walls
  • Construction of two new brick safety walls and reinforced foundations
  • Installation of safety fencing and structural shoring
  • Management of live electrical cables and utilities
  • Dust suppression measures and protective eyewear protocols
  • Provision of temporary scaffolding and site lighting

The Results

The project was successfully delivered on programme and within budget, restoring the structural integrity of the transformer pen and eliminating a critical safety risk. The newly constructed walls and additional protective measures provide a resilient solution designed to withstand future adverse conditions.

Through proactive risk management and precise delivery, Applebridge ensured Teesworks’ vital infrastructure was protected, reinforcing our expertise in delivering safe and effective construction solutions within complex operational environments.
