Their Challenge

Northern Education Trust required a coordinated programme of infrastructure improvements to address increasing pupil and staff numbers across its academies, while strengthening safeguarding, improving site circulation and aligning with Department for Education (DfE) guidance on estates management and sustainability. At Hetton Academy specifically, the Trust sought to introduce clearer segregation between vehicles and pedestrians, reduce congestion at peak times, and provide a controlled, easily understood access arrangement for students, parents and visitors.

Our Solution

Applebridge Building Services developed and delivered a targeted access and parking improvement scheme that prioritised safeguarding, operational efficiency and long-term value. Working closely with the Trust, we designed a dedicated student drop-off zone and new pedestrian routes that connect key access points, supported by Trust-branded signage and integrated access control. All elements were coordinated to ensure consistency with wider Trust standards and future expansion plans, while complying with SCA, GEMS and KCSIE requirements.

The Results

The improved circulation layout supports safer daily operations, enhances user experience for families and staff, and provides an adaptable infrastructure solution aligned with the Trust’s wider estate strategy.
